Acoustic, natural and comfortable

Sound can have adverse effects on the human body such as sleeping disorders, stress and headaches. Acoustic flooring plays a key role in improving acoustic comfort in buildings. Forbo Flooring is a specialist in acoustic floors with more than 30 years of experience.

Our acoustic linoleum floors create a healthy environment by combining sustainability with excellent sound reduction properties. We offer 3 solutions:

Marmoleum Acoustic
Forbo Marmoleum Acoustic reduces impact sound by 14dB (measured in accordance with EN ISO 717-2). It is a twinlayer linoleum built up from 2 mm Marmoleum and a 2 mm Corkment backing. Marmoleum Acoustic is currently available in 6 colours from the Marmoleum Marbled collection.

Sound is part of everyday life, but unwanted noise can significantly affect comfort and well-being. Impact sound, such as footsteps and rolling traffic, is a major source of noise in buildings. Because sound travels easily through floor structures, installing the right acoustic flooring is essential for improving indoor comfort.

The best way to reduce sound is at the source. That’s why acoustic floors are key when it comes to reducing noise in buildings.

Impact sound reduction, how does it work?
Impact sound generated in a room easily travels through the floor into the rooms below. To assess the acoustic performance of a floor covering, impact noise is produced using a hammer machine on a concrete floor slab in an emission room. The resulting sound level (S1) is measured in the reception room below.

The floor covering is then installed on the concrete slab and the same test is repeated. The new sound level (S2) is recorded, and the impact sound reduction is calculated in accordance with EN ISO 717-2 as the difference, in decibels, between the two measurements.

With impact sound reduction values ranging from 14 to 19 dB, Forbo's acoustic floors help create quieter, more comfortable environments. Ideal for healthcare, education, office and residential applications. Forbo offers acoustic resilient flooring solutions in linoleum, sheet vinyl and LVT.

A true natural beauty

At Forbo, we have been inspired by what is all around us and we are convinced that our best engineer is nature. With its help, we have created Marmoleum.

Marmoleum is a unique linoleum floor covering made of natural raw materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, limestone, resin and jute. These raw materials are obtained from their natural habitat, where they grow and renew themselves, often in just 12 months. Forbo is of course committed to work with respect with the women and men supplying our raw materials.

Linseed oil is pressed from the seeds of the flax plant. The linseed oil is heated together with pine resin to form a linoleum paste. To this paste we add wood flour, a waste product from the certified forestry industry. Limestone is available in abundance and is the fourth ingredient added to the linoleum mixture to make linoleum granules. Organic pigments and natural iron oxide provide the colouring for the granules. The fibres of the jute plant are used for the jute mesh carrier on which linoleum is calandered.

By learning to work with our planet and its organic cycles, we are able to make one of the most sustainable floor coverings. Marmoleum has been awarded a large array of international environmental certificates such as the Nordic Swan and the Blue Angel. In addition Marmoleum floor covering improves the environmental and well-being score in building rating schemes such as LEED, Breeam and the Well building standard. eco labels that have been awarded to Forbo's Marmoleum floors

Creating better environments

With Marmoleum, you choose a sustainable floor that is climate positive (cradle to gate). From the origins to the final product, without buying carbon credits.

The construction industry is one of the major contributors of carbon emissions that cause climate change. Therefore, we are looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint to combat global warming. The use of environmentally friendly building materials is becoming increasingly important when designing a new construction project.

Forbo aims to contribute to solving climate change issues by developing environmentally friendly flooring solutions.
Our Marmoleum floors are made from 98% natural raw materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, limestone, resin and jute. Marmoleum is unique as it has CO2 uptake in the product itself. The photosynthesis of the biobased materials used in Marmoleum provides CO2 uptake that exceeds the CO2 emissions caused by transportation and production processing. Therefore, Marmoleum is climate positive (or carbon negative) from cradle to gate.

Forbo uses Life Cycle Assessments to identify and continuously improve the sustainability performance of our floors. Our independently verified Environmental Product Declarations provide the information you need to make a sustainable decision. Read more about LCA and EPD on our website or see the brochure below.

We take pride in creating Marmoleum

The craft of making Marmoleum originates from the 19th century. Making linoleum was literally a handmade process, one in which the mixing, maturing and calandering of the raw materials was a trade mastered by few.

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has developed over the past 150 years into a lean, automated and energy-efficient production process. Forbo has driven this development with its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum is still an art, which is not taught at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum. Determining the right mixture of ingredients, maintaining the right time for the raw materials to settle and applying the correct temperature and pressure are skills that our experts must master. We are proud of our experts as much as they take pride in creating every piece of Marmoleum.
