Efficient and hygienic solution for coring cabbage with conveyor belts

Rietberg and Delbrück, Germany

The Customer

The customer,Heinrich Kühlmann GmbH is a growing, mid-sized company in the delicatessen sector. As the second biggest manufacturer of delicatessen products and a market-leading producer of fresh antipasti in Germany, Kühlmann supplies customers at home and abroad. Over 600 employees apply their skills and work hard every day to manufacture high-quality products that meet customers’ high demands.

The company marries values such as respect and sustainability with a trail-blazing pioneering spirit. Alongside its core business of delicatessen salads and antipasti, Kühlmann develops innovative superfood, plant-based spreads and contemporary convenience foods. Consistent growth and an increase in production capacities are pivotal to the company’s success.
Zentrik Maschinenbau GmbH develops machinery and equipment for the food industry. Its portfolio also includes maintaining, repairing and assembling machines. Spare parts for machines are both made to order and produced on a large scale in the company’s own production facility.

Cabbages on Forbo Belts

The Application

Zentrik developed a state-of-the-art cabbage corer. The corer automatically identifies and categorizes the cabbages. A scanner captures the size of the cabbages and allocates them to the right corer. As a result, the cabbages are automatically cored very accurately and efficiently without any unnecessary waste.

The cored cabbages are conveyed to the next stages via a hygienic conveyor. In this case, smooth transition between the production stages is vital.

The previous supplier used homogenous, form-fit conveyor belts that had sink marks on the top face. Combined with belt scrapers, this factor led to greater wear on the material. As a result, belts didn’t last as long and Heinrich Kühlmann GmbH’s requirements weren’t met.

The company wanted the following characteristics from the belts:
Ease of cleaning: To maintain top hygiene standards and minimize the time and effort required to clean belts.
Long service lives: To curtail wear and operating costs.
Simple assembly and disassembly: To make maintenance and cleaning quick.
Resistance to aggressive detergents: To ensure safety.
Food safety compliance: To meet stringent EU and FDA regulations.

To clean the machinery, they also wanted ease of access to the conveyor belts..

Our solution

To meet this application’s requirements, we developed a customized solution in the shape of our homogenous Siegling Fullsan Positive Drive Pro (PD) belts and Siegling Prolink modular belts.

Siegling Fullsan homogenous belts, Positive Drive PD2 U30 MT-NA-HACCP BL FDA.PD2 U30 MT-NA-HACCP BL FDA.

The positive drive system with teeth across the whole belt width ensures precise positioning and prevents slippage. The closed, smooth surface made of hydrolysis-resistant polyurethane enables quick and thorough cleaning.

Advantages of Siegling Fullsan

  • Monolithic structure: The smooth, continuous belt surface prevents dirt from building up and facilitates cleaning.

  • Chemical resistance: The belts are resistant to aggressive detergents and meet stringent EU and FDA regulations.

  • Hygienic design: The homogenous belting material offers maximum safety and efficiency for sensitive applications such as processing ingredients.

Siegling Prolink modular belts

Prolink modular belt series (S6.1 and S10)

  • Series S6.1: This series is ideal for conveying cabbages accurately and dependably. To ensure the cabbages get to the next stage without any problems, it’s designed for inclined conveying with 150 mm high flights or paddles.

  • Series S10: DThe S10 is a heavy-duty series and impressive for its high load capacity and abrasion resistance. These characteristics make it ideal for the next processing stage. Waste is conveyed away efficiently with the aid of the flights. Series 10 was chosen for this application due to its smaller end diameter.

  • Effortless modularity: The Prolink belts can be easily adapted to the application and repaired, which cuts downtime.

The Result

This solution gave Kühlmann an enormous advantage

  • First-class hygiene: The Positive Drive 2 belts’ smooth and easy-to-clean surfaces and hygienic material the Prolink modules are made of reduce the contamination risk. Due to the homogenous design, high-quality materials and lack of noticeable sink marks, the components meet all relevant MHLW, USDA, Halal and FDA/EU conformity requirements. What’s more all Prolink belting materials are NSF certified and BPA free.

  • Longer service lives: The robust, durable materials cut wear and lower maintenance costs sustainably.

  • Increased efficiency: Slip-free, precisely positioned conveying improves process accuracy and boosts productivity.

  • Economical operation: The belts’ exceptional load capacity and long service lives ensure economical operation and minimize downtime.

The combination of Fullsan Positive Drive conveyor belts and Prolink modular belts enabled Kühlmann to optimize its production processes, comply with top hygiene standards and significantly increase its cabbage corer’s efficiency.
